My love of board games goes back to my childhood and passion for building relationships with others. For the sake of brevity, I’m going to assume that most readers of this review are familiar with the Buffyverse and understand what Townies, Monsters of the Week, and Big Bads are. Buffy and the gang can almost, just about, come really close to killing all regular monsters on the map. Each hero character has a "card holder" which is a beautifully done piece of cardboard showing a full color picture of the hero with their name underneath, places for the cards they can acquire over the course of the game, a quote from that character from the series, and a quick reference to the number of Majik dice and Fight dice they get in the game. It also includes spells like The Living Flame, which is nearly essential in The Judge's game and The Mayor's game, if you want to prevent the resurrection of The Judge or the ascenscion of The Mayor.Buffy the Vampire Slayer, from Jasco Games, pits the players in the roles of the iconic TV white hats, Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Angel and Spike against the Big Bads of the TV series; The Master, The Mayor, Adam, Glory, Caleb and the First across the city of Sunnydale. Overall, I would say that Legendary: Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a fun game – however it isn’t perfect!

I only watched a few episodes of the show during it’s initial run in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, but I had plenty of friends who loved the show and consumed everything Buffy. Heroes can end a round in a location with Tonies but no baddies to rescue them, removing them from the board. First Baddies activate, then the Monster of the Week, and then finally the Big Bad if he has been revealed. With these maps especially, you can imagine characters jumping from one level to another to pursue their opponent.Each monster of the week has a unique thing they do during play to add complications to the game, and as such you’ll want them to be dealt with swiftly. To defeat the Big bad is similar to the Monster of the Week – except this time, the Big Bad must be beaten in a fight a number of times equal to the number of Plot Cards revealed.

Moving is the most obvious, allowing you to jump to any location you like on the board, regardless of whether there are any enemies occupying those areas, although the rulebook does say that for a harder game you can take a wound when leaving a location with baddies in it.

Reading a special ability of one of the Big Bads might not lend itself to you knowing who it actually is, which makes each of them seem a little generic, though a few have hints of theme, for example the master has lots of Vampire related abilities and Adam has kill demons and townie abilities. Buffy fans are hardcore, thats a given, but fans of this game have created scenarios that take the game far past its normal playability.

One of the reasons XCOM succeeds as a game is that it doesn’t give you a lot of time to dwell on what’s actually happening. It’s a combination of staid predictability of the baddies and a stochastic inconvenience of the plot related-enemies. Set in the 1990s, Buffy and her friends fought generic vampires, monsters of the week, and a “big bad” who from behind the scenes was responsible for the evil that season.

A strategy we quickly learned was using Xander to collect cards, and let him rearm Buffy and Willow while they do the fighting and spell-casting. Overall, the game is well designed and offers lots of replay depending on the choice of Characters, Big Bad, and all manner of cards drawn. The monster of the week deck consists of a mix of the tougher monsters of the Buffyverse, such as Gnarl, The Judge or Bezoar.
