Arguably he's the perfect character to get this sort of treatment in a Transformers: The Movie-centric line - he's the star of the movie and if any Autobot deserves to get the perfect toy in a line celebrating it's 35th anniversary, it's him. Due to the placement of the core's hole, Hot Rod had his port sticking out from his left knee, which makes it glaring in robot mode, but more convincing as a "jet booster" in vehicle mode. In amongst all that was the Masterpiece figure, but given some of the QC issues that has maybe that's best left forgotten. Also, due to his transformation scheme, Hot Rod is a shellformer, with the majority of the vehicle shells hanging on his rear like a backpack.

The second Kiss Players set released, Hot Rodimus is a retool and redeco of the Alternators Mirage toy, transforming into a 1:24- scale fully-licensed red Ford GT. Aside from the Energon namesake character, Hot Rod has also been homaged twice (or possibly thrice depending on how you look at it) in the Unicron Trilogy. The figure shares tooling with the concurrently released Energon Igniters Power Dropkick and was later retooled into Shatter. Upon his original release, Hot Rod had unpainted die-cast metal feet, while later editions of the figure used black plastic.With the exception of the upper legs, this combination of parts was previously already used for the 2011 Pursuit of Cobra version of Hawk, which was also the first figure to include the vest accessory that is recolored for this figure, meant to recreate the look of the synthoid Rodimus Prime's jumpsuit in Only Human.

The toy comes with a "Photon eliminator" rifle and two blast shields to attach to either side of his battle platform's cannon. His paint additions include the waist, which is entirely painted over rather than letting some of the transparency show through, and the center portion of the spoiler, which is now painted over yellow instead of unpainted orange plastic. Despite being branded only as a Transformers product, this figure was exclusively available through both Fun Publications' G. And of course, Hot Rod can hold Legends Firebolt or the Siege Battle Master Firedrive, though he cannot accommodate with Hot Rod's vehicle mode. This figure was available with a Hot Rod pin and Macrocosmic Seekers booklet directly from e-HOBBY, he was also released in Asian countries outside of Japan without said pin and booklet.Hot Rod can use the Siege Battle Master Firedrive (although you can't attach him on Hot Rod's vehicle engine) if one is okay with simultaneously having two Firedrives. When Hasbro corrected Takara about those details, Takara's designers were disappointed because they had to make Rodimus Prime's toy larger than Hot Rod's.
