I can understand that to a certain extent, but his efforts to not act like a burnt-out octogenarian (which he effectively is) are late in the book and not particularly effective.

Zeihan is obviously incredibly well-read about history, geopolitics, and technology, but no one can ever read enough to master every area of all of those subjects. However I feel that ‘The Quiet at the End of the World’ did lose Lowrie and Shen’s story in the end, focusing on a wider picture about humans and the future of life in general.
