Obviously, the earlier recordings were simpler, as the standard 2″ 24-track analog method was used, and with the tapes all being in superb condition, once they were baked and digitised (see below), I was able to start work. Songs like "Brothers in Arms" showcased their ability to create emotionally charged ballads while tracks like "Walk of Life" displayed their more upbeat side. Dire Straits is a British rock band that was formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers. It is quite laid back by comparison but the mix of the mid tempo groove and the passionate playing of Mark Knopfler makes it an album highlight for sure. The first single released was " Sultans of Swing" which first broke into the United States top five early in the spring of 1979, becoming a hit a full five months after the album was released there, and then reached number eight in the UK Singles Chart. It’s easy to imagine a band coming along, having a huge hit on the airwaves as DS did with “Sultans Of Swing,” and achieving instant fame, recognition, and wealth. By reissuing back catalogues with the promise of perfect sound for ever, they could persuade fans to shell out all over again for albums they already owned. Now, this all fits in quite tightly and I can see that already the glue is a little unstuck and as you take the CD or poster out a few times this could get worse. This was finally rectified when I was found myself chatting with Pick Withers at a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame event at Abbey Road Studios in London.

The up beat rock n roll numbers holds some well written lyrics, a very addictive rhythm and some of the finest guitar playing you'll hear from this period in rock history. Clearly, it was a remarkable evening, marking the conclusion of an exhausting tour, and you can hear the tight bond within the band. Tucker singled out "Sultans of Swing" for its "inescapable hook" and "Bob Dylan-like snarl in its vocal". Next up is Brothers in Arms which almost launched the CD format back in the day and then finally On Every Street. The reality is, of course, FAR from this, and the nature of how the industry worked then and, to some extent, does so today means that it’s a while before the hard graft pays off, if at all, as any major band that has achieved longevity will testify.
