Those two things, however, are hardly dealbreakers. They're just a few frustrations that you learn to live with. For all else, everything here works very well. By default, EMUI comes with no app drawer, just like iOS (but you can enable an app drawer in settings), and the styling of many icons is clearly “borrowed” by Apple, which is a bit shameful. Odd features aside, the Huawei P30 Pro is the firm’s most attractive, well-designed smartphone to date. I even think it looks better than the recently launched Galaxy S10 Plus, which takes some doing. With their gradient finishes and solid build quality, Huawei phones have managed to stand their ground in the flagship space and become easy to recognize in an ocean of me-too rectangular slabs. The Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro continue this tradition and come in a wide selection of new colors, all of which look nice. It might not look like much has changed on the surface but dig a little deeper and you’ll find a smorgasbord of big changes that go a long way towards justifying that sky-high price. There’s an awful lot of substance to Huawei’s new P30 Pro and, while time will tell whether its quadruple camera array has the same long-lasting appeal as its predecessor, the P30 Pro’s wide-ranging photographic capabilities are simply the icing on the cake of perhaps the most well-rounded flagship to date. With the tiny teardrop notch on the P30 Pro, you also do not get the secure 3D face recognition that Huawei had on the Mate 20 Pro. And that’s a shame! Face recognition on the Mate 20 Pro worked very well in different conditions, while the P30 Pro fingerprint scanner is not quite as reliable and effortless. Huawei explains that all of this is because of its focus on making the phone as compact as possible, with as tiny a notch as possible, so that’s the price you pay for the compact size.Still, the P30 Pro’s screen is capable of reaching a peak luminance of 854cd/m ² in the phone’s auto-brightness mode and, with this being an OLED panel, colour contrast is effectively perfect. Your main workhorse here is the 40MP SuperSpectrum sensor. What’s exciting and new with it is the RYYB arrangement. Here is what this means: rather than having a red, a blue and two green color filters as on practically all traditional cameras, the sensor replaces the green for yellow ones, so you have an RYYB arrangement. Huawei has long pushed its EMUI - that's Emotion User Interface, if you're wondering - with the P30 adopting a slightly updated version, EMUI 9.1, which is built over Google's Android Pie 9 operating system. There really aren't any massive changes compared to the Mate 20 here, but given how improved EMUI 9 was compared to some previous iterations, we think Huawei is in a place where customers will find this offering and its customisations to be acceptable. The small P30 version will only withstand the occasional splash, but it does not have explicit water resistance. On the right side of the phone are the power and volume keys, which fall nicely under thumb or finger, although volume up can be a little bit of a stretch. Chinese brand Huawei has succeeded in beating out the big names when it comes to phone cameras. The quad-camera set-up of the Huawei P30 Pro is one of the best -- if not the best -- on the market. The only rival in this area is the Google Pixel 3, and the Huawei is better in many ways. Though cameras are definitely the main selling point, the P30 Pro is a great phone in its own right. it offers an contrast-rich OLED display, amazingly long battery life, an attractive waterproof design, and plenty of power under the hood. UK Pricing Since the ban, however,Huawei has revealed that it will be bringing the Android Qupdate to theP30 Pro, in addition to “popular current devices”, despite the ongoing trade ban.
