I'm also sure the useful -˜testing', -˜nuggets' and -˜watch out for' section at the end of each chapter will also be regularly referenced.

Another good read that explains why detentions don't work and encourages rapport with the child and understanding about what fuels behaviour. Thank you Paul Dix. On a personal note, teachers like Paul (and like you if you choose to read this fantastic book) literally saved my life. It's not easy being a hero, but this book gives you all of the tools and wisdom you need to put your intentions into action. An easy and entertaining read, the book offers concrete strategies to help teachers implement the ideas recommended. For example, the repeated use of certain -˜script' phrases is one of Paul's highlights and is a strategy I have used very successfully with young children. A focus on adult behaviour is the only responsible approach. Emotionally mature adults are flexible enough to change, to be present in the toughest moments and to judge slowly. They are patient, encouraging and kind. Through the fog of anger they keep everyone safe. In the calm light of day they build rapport and emotional currency. Their expectations are always high and they will never drop their own standards because of the poor behaviour of a learner. The adults who work with the most difficult behaviours are always in control of themselves before they attempt to take control of others. Build a school that is full of them and there are no limits to achievement” This book reminded me of the importance of human interaction - how children thrive on genuine relationships with adults and the need for a whole-team approach to behavior management.

As a school leader, the idea of good behaviour stemming from a positive place rather than a fear of punishment not only resonated with my own values but there is much evidence that it is a successful strategy. But in any case, one may conclude that Dix would be against any behaviour policy involving sanctions, irrespective of whether or not it is effective as he seemingly considers all common sanctions inherently immoral. This is something I fundamentally disagree with. John is an experienced teacher and Headteacher who has worked across a number of schools in his career which has led him to have huge drive, great experience and an enormous passion for education. He is passionate about the importance of building positive relationships to drive outstanding behaviour in adults and children. John is also a strong advocate for trauma-informed, relational and restorative practice and believes that mainstream education should be a place for all children. His work has proved that a well-established positive ethos and culture in which all children and staff are valued is vital in creating the right climate for children to feel safe and secure and ultimately successful in everything they do. I like the balance and common sense in this. A lot is contextual. I work in the Middle East and the kids absolutely love a handshake. Well, the boys do. Not so much the girls. Common sense rules, or should do.
